Ross Richendrfer, a representative of Gmail, revealed to Forbes journalists that Gmail service is planning to discontinue two-step authentication via SMS soon due to security concerns. Richendrfer mentioned that this approach aligns with Google’s efforts to urge users to switch to more secure methods like Passkeys. In an attempt to eliminate insecure methods that can be easily compromised, Google plans to introduce QR codes as an alternative.
This new method has not been fully explained yet, but the process of entering a phone number and receiving a 6-digit confirmation code will be replaced with a QR code for scanning. Google claims that this approach is more secure and prevents data interception.
