Upgrade to Gen 11 CPU Required for Windows 11 24H2 as Support for Older Intel CPUs Discontinued

Microsoft has adjusted the minimum specs for Windows 11 24H2 to require an Intel Gen 11 CPU (Core, Atom, Celeron, Pentium, as long as it’s Gen 11). This means older CPUs like Intel Gen 10 won’t be able to install Windows 11 24H2.

Removing older CPUs from the list of supported CPUs for newer operating systems is common practice. In the case of Windows 11, it initially required a Gen 8 CPU and continued up to Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2 before dropping support for older CPUs in 24H2.

Intel Gen 11 CPUs were sold from 2020 and discontinued in 2024. It’s unlikely that any PC OEMs are currently selling Gen 11 CPUs.

As for AMD CPUs, Windows 11 24H2 still supports Ryzen 2000 series released in 2018, which is different from Intel’s approach of cutting off older CPUs.

TLDR: Microsoft has updated minimum requirements for Windows 11 24H2 to only support Intel Gen 11 CPUs, leaving older Gen 10 CPUs out in the cold while AMD CPUs like Ryzen 2000 series are still in the game.
