Farewell Skype: Microsoft Announces Shutdown on May 5, 2025, Transition to Teams

After unofficial news surfaced, Microsoft officially announced the closure of Skype today, effective May 5, 2025.

Microsoft cited the transition to Microsoft Teams (free) as the reason for shuttering Skype, as the former offers similar features but with a more contemporary twist, introducing several new functionalities from Skype.

Current Skype users will find it relatively easy to migrate their data to Teams by simply logging in with their existing Skype accounts. The data transfer will occur automatically, allowing for seamless chatting and calling between Teams and Skype during the transition phase. Additionally, users have the option to export their Skype data if they choose not to utilize Teams.

Customers holding Skype Credit will still be able to use it even after Skype’s closure, as it will transform into Skype Dial Pad feature for making traditional phone calls within Teams.
