Apple Falls Behind in AI Development, Siri’s Success Delayed Until 2027 by Mark Gurman

Renowned journalist Mark Gurman of Bloomberg highlighted in his newsletter “Power On” the current AI crisis faced by Apple. According to Gurman, Apple is struggling to keep up in the generative AI market and is gradually falling behind its competitors.

A year ago, Apple unveiled a new version of Siri powered by Apple Intelligence at WWDC in June. While the Apple demo looked promising, the company has failed to deliver products according to plan. For instance, Notification Summary has encountered issues, and some features of Apple Intelligence, like AI-generated emojis, are deemed useless.

Gurman pointed out that Apple has been unable to develop its own LLM model and has resorted to using OpenAI’s model, but with disappointing results. Apple’s slow entry into new markets contrasts with its ability to excel once there. The root cause of these problems remains unclear.

Previously, Amazon was another company trailing in generative AI, but Gurman praised the impressive launch of Alexa+, emphasizing how it outshined Apple Intelligence. Gurman predicts that the upcoming Siri release in May 2025 will be a crucial indicator of Apple’s success in the AI market, as Apple has yet to integrate the two existing Siri versions in iOS 19.

There are speculations that Apple may announce the integration of these systems at WWDC 25 in mid-2025, with the official release in iOS 19.4 in early 2026. As such, the wait for Siri’s human-like conversational abilities may extend to iOS 20 in 2027.

Gurman’s sources suggest minimal changes in Apple Intelligence for iOS 19, indicating Apple’s struggle to keep up with existing features. The AI woes at Apple extend beyond Siri and Apple Intelligence to include Swift Assist, a feature for app developers that debuted at WWDC 24 and has since faded into obscurity.

TLDR: Apple is facing an AI crisis as it struggles to compete in the generative AI market, with Siri’s new version expected to be a crucial test of Apple’s AI capabilities. Despite challenges, Apple continues to strive for innovation in AI technology.
