Unveiling Apple’s Mac Studio: Why the Absence of M4 Ultra Signals a Shift in Chip Strategy

Apple unveiled the new Mac Studio last night after almost two years since the previous model. The intriguing aspect is Apple opting for the Apple Silicon chip configuration as the M4 Max and M3 Ultra models instead of sticking to a single chip model and dividing it into Max/Ultra like the M1 and M2. Surprisingly, the M3 Ultra boasts higher specs than the M4 Max.

Ars Technica inquired about Apple’s decision to go this route, choosing M4 Max and M3 Ultra instead of a potential M4 Ultra with possibly even higher specs. The response was, “Not every model needs an Ultra variant.”

Apple’s explanation hints that we may not see an M4 Ultra, contradicting previous speculation by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggesting Apple could reserve the M4 Ultra for the Mac Pro to make it hardware with significantly stronger specs than the Mac Studio.

TLDR: Apple introduced the new Mac Studio with M4 Max and M3 Ultra chip variants, offering higher specs with the M3 Ultra surprising as it outperforms the M4 Max. Speculation suggests Apple may reserve the M4 Ultra for the Mac Pro for even more powerful hardware.
