GIMP 3.0 Officially Released Today – A New Era Unveiled

After a long-awaited anticipation spanning decades (GIMP 2.0 released in 2004, GIMP 2.10 in 2018), the most recent version of GIMP 3.0 emerged as a stable release last week.

One of the significant changes in GIMP 3.0 is the shift to using GTK 3.x as its foundation, providing better support for high-resolution displays (HiDPI) compared to GIMP 2.x. It now allows for improved drawing input from tablets, supports non-destructive editing with filters, displays real-time changes to results, and enhances compatibility with Photoshop’s PSD image format. Additionally, it has revamped systems for layers, text, color management, and other detailed changes.

GIMP 3.0 also introduces a new flat-style icon for Wilber the dog, which gives a more minimalistic appearance. As of now, GIMP 3.0 is available for download on Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms.

TLDR: GIMP 3.0 brings significant improvements such as support for HiDPI displays, non-destructive editing, real-time result changes, and enhanced compatibility with Photoshop PSD files, alongside a fresh flat-style icon for Wilber.
