Daily NK reports that North Korea has established the “Research Center 227” under the Reconnaissance General Bureau (RGB) to develop advanced cyber warfare technology. Kim Jong Un ordered the establishment of this center in late February.
The primary goal of Research Center 227 is not focused on reconnaissance of potential threats or traditional strategic benefits. Instead, it aims to develop aggressive hacking tools, specifically targeting the cyber security systems of Western nations, stealing financial assets, and utilizing AI to steal data. Additionally, there are plans to build an automated system for collecting and analyzing data, collaborating with North Korean hackers operating across the globe in real-time.
The RGB has selected computer experts from top universities, as well as individuals with advanced degrees, totaling more than 90 people, to develop advanced hacking programs. North Korea has a history of major cyber thefts, such as the $1.4 billion Bybit hack. The National Security Agency (NSA) and FBI have long implicated RGB in cyber hacking and crimes.
