The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), well-known for organizing E3 (recently rebranded as iicon), has announced the establishment of the Accessible Games Initiative. This initiative aims to set a standard for features that cater to gamers with disabilities.
The Accessible Games Initiative will outline a list of features to support individuals with disabilities in various forms, in a format of “tags”. Initially, there are 24 tags, such as clear text, large and clear subtitles, narrated menus, stereo sound, playable with touch/buttons/mouse/keyboard only, stick inversion, save anytime (full list of tags). This will allow game companies to collaboratively use a unified standard, ensuring that gamers can easily understand what each tag represents.
Founding members of the Accessible Games Initiative include major companies like Electronic Arts, Google, Microsoft, Nintendo of America, Sony Interactive Entertainment, and Ubisoft, along with other announced members like Amazon Games, Riot Games, Square Enix, and Warner Bros. Games.
