2024: Expenditure on AI Apps Surpasses $1 Billion, Marking a 200% Increase from Previous Year

The State of Mobile 2025 report by Sensor Tower reveals that spending on AI applications such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Doubao by ByteDance in 2024 reached nearly $1.1 billion, a whopping increase of over 200% from the previous year.

While Big Tech companies like OpenAI continue to unveil AI models like GPT-4o, generating significant revenue from their apps, the overall demand for AI apps remains high throughout the year. Consumers spent approximately 7.7 billion hours using AI apps, with AI-related apps being downloaded over 17 billion times.

Other app categories also witnessed changes:

– Streaming apps saw an increase in revenue and downloads but a decrease in engagement.
– Binance and Tonkeeper ranked 6th and 9th respectively for most downloaded financial apps.
– Temu and Shein claimed the top spots for popular e-commerce apps.

Financial apps saw a total of almost 7.5 billion downloads, an 8% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, apps like Last War, Whiteout Survival, Dungeon & Fighter, Brawl Stars, and WeTV surpassed the $1 billion spending mark by users.

The report highlights that users continue to heavily invest in mobile apps, with a global value of up to $1.5 trillion.
