A Whopping 10 Million Accounts Have Signed Up for Telegram’s Premium Service, Functionality Suspected to be Inundated with Numerous Bots and Scams

Telegram has revealed that the number of users subscribing to the monthly paid service, Telegram Premium, has now reached 10 million accounts, doubling in less than 8 months. As for the total number of users, it’s approaching 1 billion.

Pavel Durov, the CEO and founder of Telegram, discusses various changes and additions to the platform, including:

– Discontinuing the People Nearby function due to low usage of less than 0.1% and numerous bot and scam accounts.
– Introducing the Businesses Nearby function for business accounts that are verified, displaying information within the area.
– Disabling the ability to upload new content on Telegraph, a system for posting long-form content, due to inappropriate usage.

Durov acknowledges that 0.001% of the activities happening on Telegram are unlawful and tarnish the platform’s image. Hence, steps are being taken to shut down functions being used inappropriately, ensuring that 99.999% of users who have done nothing wrong can continue using the platform safely.
