IBM has announced the acquisition of DataStax, the company behind the Astra DB NoSQL database built on Apache Cassandra technology. Founded in 2010 by former Rackspace employees who developed Apache Cassandra, DataStax’s flagship products include DataStax Enterprise (an enterprise version of Cassandra) and Astra DB (a DBaaS Cassandra service managed by DataStax). Additionally, the company supports other open-source projects like Langflow, a low-code development tool for AI Agent applications.
IBM believes in the power of open source, and considers DataStax to be highly proficient in Cassandra, Langflow, and OpenSearch technologies. Acquiring DataStax will enhance their portfolio of unstructured and semi-structured data storage products, aligning them under the umbrella of the watsonx brand, IBM’s AI product line.
The financial details of this acquisition have not been disclosed, and the purchase is expected to be finalized in the second quarter of 2025 pending regulatory approval.
TLDR: IBM acquires DataStax to bolster its unstructured and semi-structured data storage offerings, leveraging DataStax’s expertise in Cassandra and open-source technologies.
