SoftBank has reportedly acquired the land and buildings that used to be Sharp’s LCD component factory in Osaka, Japan, to convert it into a data center for AI processing in collaboration with OpenAI.
The value of the factory and buildings purchased by SoftBank from Sharp is said to be around 1 trillion yen or approximately 2.2 trillion baht. The data center is expected to commence operations in 2026 with a power capacity of 150 megawatts, making it one of the largest data centers in Japan.
In addition to their partnership in the Stargate project in the United States, SoftBank and OpenAI are also collaborating to develop advanced artificial intelligence for corporate clients, known as Cristal intelligence. Initially, SoftBank plans to offer this solution to companies and agencies in Japan.
