A mobile app data analysis company, Sensor Tower, has recently acquired its competitor Data.ai, formerly known as App Annie, without disclosing the financial details. Data.ai, established in 2010, provided mobile app usage statistics, while Sensor Tower, founded in 2013, has now merged with it. This consolidation has left the mobile app data analysis market dominated by a single player, with Sensor Tower confirming plans to lay off some employees from the Data.ai side, out of a total of around 400 individuals.
The specifics behind this deal remain unclear, but TechCrunch speculates that it may stem from Data.ai being investigated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2021 for securities fraud allegations and previous questionable practices of selling data to other companies without proper user data deletion.
