AMD has unveiled the FSR 4 technique that is now used with the Radeon RX 9000, resulting in positive reviews. It is the development of an AI model that utilizes image upscaling in conjunction with Sony. This news isn’t particularly surprising, considering that AMD collaborated with Sony to develop the PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling) technique used in the PS5 Pro earlier and is now integrated into games on the PS5 Pro that have been supported since late 2024.
The collaboration between AMD and Sony, codenamed Project Amethyst, focuses on developing AI architecture for gaming graphics that can be utilized across platforms, whether it be console, PC, or cloud. The FSR 4 model is a product of Amethyst, bringing forth a new era of graphical advancements.
However, the current limitation of the FSR 4 technique is that it is only compatible with the GPUs 9070 and 9070 XT, reminiscent of NVIDIA’s DLSS when it first launched, and cannot work with GPUs from other manufacturers like FSR 1-3 could in the past.
TLDR: AMD and Sony’s collaboration on Project Amethyst has led to the development of the impressive FSR 4 technique, enhancing image upscaling in gaming graphics, although it is currently limited to specific AMD GPUs.
