AI Advances in Flood Prediction by Google Research: Data from 80 Countries, 7-Day Early Warning

Google publishes research in the scientific journal Nature on the use of Machine Learning technology to predict global-scale flooding events. This initiative, known as Flood Hub, has been in development since 2008 and gathers data from 80 countries.

According to Google, AI can now forecast floods up to 7 days in advance, allowing government agencies and humanitarian organizations to prepare and mitigate losses effectively.

The advantage of employing AI for data processing lies in its ability to make predictions even in regions with limited water level or weather-related data. Through LSTM-trained AI models with a global perspective, accurate flood predictions are now feasible in data-scarce areas like parts of Africa, reaching a level comparable to that of Europe.
