Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 witnesses iPhone plummeting from 5,000-meter altitude, screen remains unscathed

An unforeseen incident occurred on a local time Friday, involving a mishap with Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 while airborne. A gap and pressure issue emerged in the passenger cabin, prompting the aircraft to make an emergency landing. Fortunately, there were no fatalities.

However, various objects on the aircraft were dislodged and fell down. Among these recoveries was an iPhone, which plummeted from a staggering altitude of 16,000 feet (approximately 5,000 meters). The device was encased in a protective cover, exhibiting no signs of screen damage or cracks. Its battery level stood at around 44%, and it was in Airplane mode. Additionally, there was an email notification from the airline regarding a lost luggage claim.

Upon discovering this iPhone, Seanathan Bates promptly reported it to the relevant safety authorities. Surprisingly, it was revealed that this was the second phone to be found, following a similar incident involving the same aircraft.

This incident may appear astounding, but it can be explained by the compact size of iPhones and the non-rigid nature of ground surfaces. The terminal velocity of the iPhone upon impact is not significantly different from falling at a moderate height.
