Alibaba is hosting the Alibaba Global Math Competition, a math competition that began in 2018, but this year is special because it allows AI to compete as well. However, all AI teams were eliminated in the preliminary round, leaving only 802 human participants.
The minimum score for the preliminary round was 45 points, but the highest score achieved by an AI team was only 34 points. The average score of AI teams was 18 points, similar to the general participants. The highest-scoring participant achieved a score of 113 points. There were a total of 7 questions in the competition, including multiple-choice and show-your-work formats.
The AI team with the highest score was created by Tu Jinhao from Jianping High School in Shanghai. He achieved this by challenging himself and repeatedly verifying his own answers.
The standout feature of the Alibaba Global Math Competition is the relatively high rewards. The top 5 participants will receive prizes of up to $30,000 or more than a million baht, with 10 silver coin winners receiving $15,000 or over five hundred thousand baht, and 20 bronze coin winners receiving $8,000 or more than three hundred thousand baht. The rewards for AI participants are separate.
Participants from around the world are welcome to compete in this competition, although the majority are from China.
