Alphabet has announced that Taara, the project developing technology to transmit internet data using light, will spin off as an independent company from the X Moonshot Factory project, in addition to receiving additional funding from leading investors like Series X Capital. Alphabet will retain minority shares in Taara.
Taara is advancing the technology of transmitting internet data using narrow beam light devices, known as Taara Lightbridge, which are invisible to the naked eye. The key advantage of Taara Lightbridge is its easy installation and maintenance, particularly in areas where laying fiber optic cables is costly, such as densely populated areas, crossing rivers or seas, remote areas, and even national parks. The current maximum speed achievable is 20Gbps over a distance of up to 20 kilometers.
Currently, Taara is being tested in 12 countries worldwide and has been trialed at events with a large number of attendees, such as the Coachella music festival.
Taara is a project that evolved from Loon, a project that provided internet data transmission in remote areas using balloons, which has since closed down. Taara utilizes light-based data transmission technology to set up stations in remote areas, as well as develops processing chips for transmission devices.
