AltStore, the alternative app store for iOS, is now officially launching in Europe under the DMA regulations. AltStore PAL has been introduced for users with iOS 17.4 and above in the European region. Users can directly access the AltStore website and install it from there.
However, AltStore PAL is not a free app and requires an annual service fee of 1.50 euros. Developers state that this fee covers the Core Technology Fee from Apple and other costs such as transaction processing and server fees.
Initially, AltStore PAL offers two apps – Delta, an emulator for Nintendo games now allowed on iOS by Apple, and Clip, a clipboard management app. Both apps are developed by Riley Testut, the creator of AltStore. Future plans include offering external apps as well.
AltStore PAL marks the first alternative app store on iOS compliant with Europe’s DMA regulations. Other companies have also announced similar initiatives, such as Epic Games Store set to launch by 2024 and Xbox looking to establish a mobile game store.
