Amazon Shuts Down Android Appstore Without Disclosure of Reasons

Amazon has notified developers and announced on its customer support page that it will be shutting down the Amazon Appstore for Android starting on August 20 of this year. Developers will no longer be able to submit apps to the store, and users will no longer be able to access the Amazon Appstore after that date. Apps downloaded through this channel may not guarantee normal functionality on Android.

Additionally, Amazon has also announced the discontinuation of the Amazon Coins program, which is used as currency to purchase apps or in-app items on the same day. After August 20, if users still have remaining Coins, Amazon will refund the equivalent amount.

Nevertheless, Amazon Appstore will still be available on Fire TV and Fire tablets. Amazon introduced the Amazon Appstore to build its own app ecosystem since 2011, with a clear effort when launching the Fire Phone. However, this project did not succeed, and Amazon also closed the Appstore on Windows last year.

TLDR: Amazon is shutting down the Amazon Appstore for Android on August 20, along with discontinuing the Amazon Coins program, while still maintaining the service on Fire TV and Fire tablets.
