AMD Unveils Ryzen 9000 with Zen 5 Architecture Boosting Efficiency, Lowering Power Consumption by 30%

AMD unveiled the highly anticipated Ryzen 9000 desktop processors at Computex in Taiwan, showcasing the latest Zen 5 architecture under the codename “Granite Ridge”. The standout feature of Zen 5 is its improved energy efficiency, attributed to advancements in CPU microarchitecture (with a 16% increase in IPC) and manufacturing technology (expected to be TSMC 4nm). This results in the new Ryzen 9000 series retaining the same core count, clock speeds, and cache as its predecessor Ryzen 7000 with a notable 30% decrease in TDP.

The initial lineup of Ryzen 9000 processors includes 4 models:

– Ryzen 9 9950X: 16 cores 32 threads, max clock speed of 5.7GHz, 80MB cache, TDP 170W
– Ryzen 9 9900X: 12 cores 24 threads, max clock speed of 5.6GHz, 76MB cache, TDP 120W
– Ryzen 7 9700X: 8 cores 16 threads, max clock speed of 5.5GHz, 40MB cache, TDP 65W
– Ryzen 5 9600X: 6 cores 12 threads, max clock speed of 5.4GHz, 38MB cache, TDP 65W

All processors except for the flagship Ryzen 9 9950X have a reduced TDP compared to their Ryzen 7000 counterparts with the same core count, clock speed, and cache:

– Ryzen 9 9900X TDP 120W/162W vs Ryzen 9 7900X TDP 170W/230W
– Ryzen 7 9700X TDP 68W/88W vs Ryzen 7 7700X TDP 105W/142W
– Ryzen 5 9600X TDP 65W/88W vs Ryzen 5 7600X TDP 105W/142W

The flagship Ryzen 9 9950X maintains the same TDP as the previous Ryzen 9 7950X model focused on maximum performance.

Ryzen 9000 comes equipped with the new X870 and X870E chipsets, featuring the AM5 socket, with support promised until 2027. The Ryzen 9000 processors are scheduled to hit the market in July 2024.
