Following GitHub’s announcement to discontinue development of the text editor Atom (built on Electron) in mid-2022, the open-source nature of the software allows the user community to continue developing it. In the past year, a project named Pulsar has emerged.
Pulsar aims to create “A Community-led Hyper-Hackable Text Editor”. It intends to build upon the original Atom source code, update underlying technologies (such as Electron and Node.js) to keep them current, and create a repository system for Atom’s extensions, replacing the now-defunct Atom.io.
Pulsar is still in its early stages, and several core components are not yet ready, including the automatic update system and package management. However, it is already available for download on Windows, Linux, and macOS.
TLDR: GitHub’s discontinuation of Atom has led to the birth of Pulsar, a community-led text editor that builds upon Atom’s source code and modernizes its technology. While still in development, Pulsar is available for use on various operating systems.
