A turmoil unfolds at the game company Annapurna Interactive, a subsidiary of the media and film company Annapurna Pictures, as all employees submit resignation letters due to conflicts with company owner Megan Ellison (daughter of Oracle’s Larry Ellison, though the companies are unrelated).
Founded in 2016, Annapurna Interactive started as a distributor of indie games, with notable titles such as What Remains of Edith Finch, Journey PC version, Outer Wilds, Kentucky Route Zero, Stray, Cocoon, and recently announced their first in-house developed game, Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth, along with investing in Remedy Entertainment’s Control 2.
The conflict at Annapurna Interactive began when company president Nathan Gary negotiated with Megan Ellison about separating Annapurna Interactive as an independent company. However, failed negotiations led Gary and approximately 25 employees to resign.
The group led by Nathan Gary stated that resigning was the most difficult decision, while Annapurna’s spokesperson confirmed unsuccessful negotiations, leading to actual resignations. Currently, Annapurna’s urgent task is to support independent game developers and existing partners during this transitional period, with a commitment to continue game distribution.
Hector Sanchez, the new president of Annapurna Interactive (previously with Epic Games and now back with Annapurna), reaffirms that existing agreements with developers will remain intact and new staff will be hired to replace those who resigned.
