Announcement: OneDrive to discontinue direct file upload feature via URL; reasons for low user engagement obscure

Microsoft has announced that the feature to upload files to OneDrive using a URL will no longer be available starting from March 29, 2024. Previously, Microsoft had tested this feature on OneDrive where users could upload files using a URL, which was in preview status. The advantage was that in some cases, users did not have to download the file first and then upload it back to OneDrive, they could skip this step altogether. However, Microsoft stated that although this feature was convenient for users in the mentioned cases, after testing it for a while, they found minimal usage while the cost of maintaining this feature was significantly high and did not align with OneDrive’s direction. Therefore, they have decided to discontinue this feature. Original files uploaded using a URL will still be accessible as usual.

TLDR: Microsoft is discontinuing the feature to upload files to OneDrive using a URL due to low usage and high maintenance costs, which do not align with OneDrive’s direction. Files previously uploaded using a URL will still be accessible.
