Rapidus, a chip manufacturer from Japan, has announced the initiation of their EUV 2nm chip production line for testing within this April. This comes after the company invested in developing the manufacturing process since 2022.
Established just over 2 years ago, Rapidus has received funding from major Japanese capital groups such as Denso, Kioxia, MUFG, NEC, NTT, SoftBank, Sony, and Toyota. The core technology has been developed in collaboration with IBM.
The project is divided into two parts – the front-end, which produces silicon chips directly, and the back-end, focused on developing packages to support 2nm silicon. Currently, the production line is limited to the front-end, with the delivery of Process Design Kit (PDK) to allow customers to design chips. Rapidus aims to develop advanced chip production fully, requiring the development of several technologies including interpose chip technology, 3D packaging systems, Assembly Design Kits (ADK), and chip verification technologies.
