Apple Abandons In-House microLED Display Development Project, Dismisses Entire Department Staff

Apple has been developing its own microLED display components for use in its products since at least 2018, following a similar path to the development of Apple Silicon chips. However, it seems that this plan has now been scrapped.

Information from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman indicates that employees in the microLED development division have been informed that Apple has decided to cancel the project, resulting in the dismissal of all related staff in both the United States and Asia. Some employees have been offered the opportunity to relocate to other departments.

Apple was planning to use its internally developed microLED technology in the upcoming Apple Watch Ultra, which would have been the first product to feature this technology. With the cancellation of the microLED development plan, reports suggest that Apple will instead opt for OLED displays across all its products, with LG and Samsung remaining as the main suppliers.
