Apple Dominates Smartphone Market in China in 2023, Securing Top Position in Market Share [IDC]

IDC, a market research company, has released a report on the smartphone market in China for the year 2023. This market is the largest in the world, with a total of 271.3 million units shipped, representing a 5.0% decrease from the previous year.

Despite the overall decline throughout the year, specific numbers for the fourth quarter of 2023 show signs of market recovery. With a delivery of 73.6 million units, there was a 1.2% increase compared to the third quarter of 2023. This is the first quarter-on-quarter growth after a 10-quarter decline. The growth primarily comes from premium and flagship smartphones, while low to mid-range models continue to decline.

Apple dominates the smartphone market in 2023 with a market share of 17.3%, followed by Honor (17.1%), OPPO (16.7%), vivo (16.5%), and Xiaomi (13.2%). Arthur Guo, an analyst from IDC, suggests that this is a result of Huawei redirecting its smartphone business, providing an opportunity for Apple to grow. Additionally, Apple has extensively promoted price discounts. However, the numbers for the fourth quarter of 2023 reflect Huawei’s comeback, securing the fourth position, while Apple remains in the top spot.

In summary, IDC’s report highlights the decline in the Chinese smartphone market in 2023. Nevertheless, there are positive indications of recovery in the fourth quarter, driven by premium smartphones. Despite Huawei’s resurgence, Apple remains the market leader.

TLDR: IDC’s report reveals a 5.0% decline in the Chinese smartphone market in 2023, with Apple dominating the market. However, the fourth quarter of the year shows signs of recovery, particularly for premium smartphones. Huawei makes a comeback in the rankings, but Apple maintains its top position.
