Last week, Apple released a firmware update for the AirTag Bluetooth tracking device, bringing it to the latest version 2A73 (2.0.73). Apple has been rolling out this firmware update gradually, starting with approximately 1% of users before expanding the update to a wider audience in subsequent waves. This method allows for testing without causing system overload. However, in a rare occurrence, all AirTags were updated simultaneously in a single day.
According to iSoftware Updates, Apple mistakenly set the firmware deployment dates using the format “m/d/24” instead of “m/d/2024” as in previous versions. This error led AirTags to interpret the dates as being in the year 24, triggering the mass update.
Users can check their AirTag firmware version by accessing the Find My app, selecting Items, choosing the AirTag device, and tapping on the device name to view the firmware version.
TLDR: Apple accidentally set the AirTag firmware deployment dates to the year 24 instead of 2024 due to a formatting error, resulting in a simultaneous mass update of all AirTags.
