Apple unveils its own AI feature called Apple Intelligence, which is a suite of advanced artificial intelligence features designed to make user interaction with their phones easier, similar to Samsung Galaxy AI.
Apple aims to utilize the processing power of the user’s device as the primary source of computation. However, in cases where certain processes cannot be handled locally, the data will be sent to the Private Cloud for processing. This ensures that user data is respected for privacy, with researchers able to access and verify the code running in the cloud. The phone will confirm that the code sent to the cloud has been vetted before sending data, ensuring that data processed in the cloud is not stored on servers but returned to the user after processing. Within Apple Intelligence, a semantic index is used to convert data for improved searchability, allowing various services to access relevant information more efficiently.
At the core of Apple’s AI is Siri, with the new version accompanying iOS 18 offering enhanced functionalities. This includes increased on-screen awareness, enabling Siri to extract information from photos, such as driver’s licenses in the Photos app, and automatically fill out web forms or add addresses to contacts.
For external developers, Apple will introduce the App Intent API to enable direct app command through Siri. Additionally, there are rumors of a collaboration with OpenAI, incorporating GPT-4o into Siri, although users will engage with Siri instead of directly with GPT-4o. If Siri determines that a query requires input from GPT-4o, users will receive a prompt to confirm their consent.
The image features of Apple Intelligence consist of three parts: Genmoji for creating emojis based on descriptions, Image Playground for generating DALL-E style images with an open API for developers, and the Photos app with enhanced capabilities for removing people or objects from photos.
Apple Intelligence features will initially be available for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia in American English, with additional language support planned for the following year.
TLDR: Apple introduces Apple Intelligence with advanced AI features focusing on user privacy and enhanced functionality through Siri and image processing capabilities, set to roll out across various Apple devices.
