In the past 2-3 years, several games similar to Civilization have emerged, such as Old World, developed by Soren Johnson, the lead designer of Civilization IV, and Humankind, created by Amplitude Studios, known for their strategic sci-fi game Endless Space.
The latest addition to this genre is Ara: History Untold, developed by Oxide Games, founded by Brad Wardell (founder of Stardock and owner of the Galactic Civilizations series), along with former members of Firaxis, the studio behind the Civilization games. Prior to this, Oxide Games released Ashes of the Singularity in 2016.
Ara is a nation-building game that shares similarities with Civilization, but with a crucial difference – it doesn’t have clear victory conditions like building spaceships, negotiating diplomacy, or waging wars. This is because it aims to avoid boxing in players too much and provides them with more freedom to adapt based on randomized factors within the game.
Ara has partnered with Xbox Publishing as its distributor and will be exclusively available on Windows PC. The game is slated for a rough release date of late 2024 and will be playable through PC Game Pass from day one.
TLDR: Ara: History Untold is an upcoming nation-building game similar to Civilization, developed by Oxide Games in collaboration with former Firaxis team members. It offers players more freedom by removing clear victory conditions and is set to release on Windows PC through Xbox Publishing in late 2024. Players will be able to access it through PC Game Pass from the start.
