Archetype Entertainment is a fresh game studio under the umbrella of Wizard of the Coast (Dungeons & Dragons), founded in 2019 with the aim of creating new games outside of the existing franchise (old news).
Heading the studio is James Ohlen, former creative director of BioWare, who has been in the industry since the first installment of Baldur’s Gate, allowing him to bring several former teammates from BioWare on board. These include Drew Karpyshyn, the lead writer of the first two Mass Effect games, as well as other team members from renowned studios such as 343, Electronic Arts, and Naughty Dog.
After silently working on the project for several years, Archetype Entertainment finally unveils their first creation called Exodus. This action-packed sci-fi game revolves around the concept of time-travel exploration.
The story of Exodus takes place on a dying world, where humanity sets out on a journey to find a new star. However, they come across an alien race resembling robotic beings (reminiscent of the Protoss in StarCraft) and find themselves engaged in a war. The human faction in the game is referred to as Travelers, while the alien races are known as Celestials.
One of the standout features of Exodus is the ability to travel at the speed of light (referred to as Time Dilation in the game), which causes time to progress differently for the characters on their journey compared to their friends and family. The developers state that this factor is integrated into the gameplay to have an impact on the storyline. Players must make crucial decisions on how they utilize light-speed travel. The game also incorporates player decision-making that greatly influences the narrative, following in the style of BioWare games.
Exodus also boasts the presence of renowned actor Matthew McConaughey (star of Interstellar) in its cast, although his role is yet undisclosed. He also presented the game on The Game Awards stage.
Exodus has been announced for release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, but no specific release date has been disclosed.
