Alibaba’s DAMO Institute reports success in developing the disruptive “Baguan” AI model for detailed weather forecasting up to ten days ahead at an hourly level. The model can provide precise forecasts within a 1-square-kilometer area.
The team leveraged ERA5 dataset, recording weather conditions since 1979, along with local data such as temperature, wind speed, and sunlight levels. Alibaba demonstrated Baguan’s efficacy in energy management, accurately predicting rapid temperature drops in China. This enables electricity providers to forecast a corresponding decrease in energy usage swiftly. By incorporating weather conditions, the accuracy of electricity demand forecasts improves to 98.1%.
