Asus Unveils Cutting-Edge ROG Strix Scar Laptop at CES2024, Boasting Mini-LED Display and Unparalleled ROG Zephyrus with OLED Screen

Asus has unveiled three new laptop models at CES2024, namely the ROG Strix Scar 18, ROG Zephyrus G14, and G16. These laptops boast impressive features such as Mini-LED and OLED panels.

The ROG Strix Scar 18 showcases a 18-inch display that now utilizes a Mini-LED panel, as opposed to the previous IPS panel. This Mini-LED panel is capable of local dimming with an impressive 2,304 zones, bringing it close to the 2,554 zones of the 16-inch Macbook Pro. The color gamut coverage includes sRGB 100%, DCI-P3 100%, and Adobe RGB 91%, with a screen resolution of 2560 x 1600.

PC World’s tests have revealed that Asus’ Mini-LED display can reach a maximum brightness of 1,153 nits, offering excellent HDR performance compared to other models in the market. Although there is still some blooming in dark scenes, it is significantly reduced. Additionally, the display boasts the highest contrast ratio, with a ratio of 25600:1 for the deepest blacks and whitest whites.

The ROG Zephyrus G14 and G16 are the first laptops in the market with OLED screens that incorporate Nvidia’s G-Sync technology. The G14 features a screen resolution of 2880×1800 and a refresh rate of 120Hz, while the G16 has a screen resolution of 2560 x 1600 and a maximum refresh rate of 240Hz, with a response time of 0.02 milliseconds. Both models offer color gamut coverage of sRGB 100%, DCI-P3 100%, and Adobe RGB 91% (91% for the G14, 97% for the G16), along with a maximum HDR brightness of 600 nits.

According to Asus, most OLED laptop displays in the market use Samsung panels, and the ROG Zephyrus G14 and G16 are no exception. However, Asus has collaborated with Samsung and Nvidia to address the issue of OLED pixels not maintaining continuous brightness when rapidly turned on and off. The solution involves increasing the pixel release frequency to 960Hz for the G16 and 480Hz for the G14, effectively mitigating this problem. (This issue does not occur with OLED panels in general monitors, and most OLED monitors in the market already support Adaptive Sync.)

TLDR: Asus has introduced three new laptop models, including the ROG Strix Scar 18, ROG Zephyrus G14, and G16, featuring cutting-edge Mini-LED and OLED panels. The ROG Strix Scar 18’s 18-inch Mini-LED display offers excellent color coverage and local dimming, while the ROG Zephyrus G14 and G16 boast OLED screens with high refresh rates, response times, and HDR capabilities. Asus has collaborated with Samsung and Nvidia to solve the issue of OLED brightness fluctuations when rapidly powered on and off, resulting in an enhanced viewing experience.
