The prestigious film industry event of the year, the 96th Academy Awards, has announced the winners. This year may not be the year of streaming platforms as only one award was received in total.
Netflix secured 1 award in the short film category for “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” directed by Wes Anderson. Netflix had a total of 19 nominations in 11 categories, with “Maestro” receiving 7 nominations but missing out on all of them.
On the other hand, Apple had 13 nominations, with the standout being “Killers of the Flower Moon” directed by Martin Scorsese, which had 10 nominations but also went home empty-handed. Additionally, Amazon won 1 award for adaptation in American Fiction distributed by studio Orion Pictures, which is under Amazon’s MGM umbrella.
Apple previously won a major award for their original work on Apple TV+ with “CODA” at the 2022 Oscars. The highlights of this year include “Oppenheimer” directed by Christopher Nolan, winning awards for Best Picture and Best Director, with awards for Best Actor (Cillian Murphy) and Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.). In the animation category, “The Boy and the Heron” by Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli won, while in visual effects, “Godzilla Minus One,” the first Japanese film to win in this category, took home the award.
