Authentic Transformation: Google Maps Renames Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America for Users in the United States

Google Maps has officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America for users in the United States. This change aligns with the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).

The name Gulf of America will now be visible to users in the US, while users in Mexico will continue to see the Gulf of Mexico as before. Users from other countries will see both names on Google Maps.

Google explains that the names users see on Maps depend on their location, determined by the phone’s operating system, SIM, network, and location. When using Maps on the web, the name of a location depends on the region selected by the user in search settings or the device’s location.
