Automattic Submits Counteroffer to Dissenting Employees in WordPress War, Resigns with 9-Month Salary Package

TechCrunch reported statements from Slack within Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, led by CEO Matt Mullenweg. He presented a new proposal to employees following the company’s decision to respond to WP Engine, which some employees disagreed with. Initially, 159 employees accepted the offer to leave the company with a 6-month salary package.

This time, Mullenweg suggested that some employees may not have made a quick decision and missed the opportunity. Therefore, he offered a new proposal for a 9-month salary upon resignation. However, the catch is that all Automattic and WordPress.org accounts used by employees will be seized, and they will be banned from the WordPress community immediately, including any past open-source projects they were involved in. Office equipment and laptops can be taken along.

Mullenweg stated that employees interested in the offer should send him a private message, and he will not ask for any reasons at all. They only have 4 hours to decide, but there are no reports on how many employees have accepted this offer.

TLDR: Matt Mullenweg, CEO of Automattic, proposed a new deal for employees following a company decision, offering a 9-month salary upon resignation, with the condition of seizing accounts and banning from the WordPress community. Employees have a 4-hour window to decide without giving any reasons.
