AWS has announced the discontinuation of the Snowmobile service, which facilitated the transfer of up to 100PB of data from data centers to AWS using a container truck. Introduced 8 years ago, the 18-wheeler container truck was showcased at a seminar in Las Vegas.
Representatives from AWS stated that the company now offers alternative options that are more cost-effective for data migration to AWS, providing both speed and simplicity compared to the Snowmobile method, which required customers to manage power systems, cooling systems, and more.
Currently, AWS offers data migration options such as Snowball Edge, which transfers data and sends it via mail, Snowcone, a smaller-sized option, and AWS DataSync, which automatically syncs data with the cloud.
