Azul Systems Inc., a company specializing in Java business by developing its own JVM to compete with Sun/Oracle’s version, has revealed survey results of expert and professional Java enthusiasts worldwide, approximately 660 individuals. 86% stated that they are attempting to migrate away from Oracle Java due to cost reasons.
This situation stems from changes in Oracle’s licensing perspective in 2023, making Oracle Java more expensive than before. Consequently, many organizational clients have started transitioning to alternative Java options such as Amazon Corretto, Eclipse Adoptium, Microsoft Build of OpenJDK, Red Hat OpenJDK, and Azul Java.
53% of respondents in the Azul survey clearly indicated their intention to move away from Oracle Java due to cost considerations, with 75% of those who have successfully migrated providing information that the transition was completed within 1 year.
The survey results from Azul, a key competitor of Oracle, supporting the migration trend is not surprising. However, surveys from non-direct competitors like New Relic also reflect a similar pattern, indicating that organizational clients are shifting away from Oracle Java.
