The National Data Protection Committee (ANPD) of Brazil has issued a directive prohibiting Meta from using publicly posted user data on its platform for AI training, following Meta’s latest privacy policy update. Meta has a 5-day window to adjust its policy, after which it will be fined 50,000 Brazilian reais per day, approximately 3,300 pounds.
The data privacy watchdog in Brazil has approved this decision, stating that Meta’s policy in Brazil will involve utilizing posts and data of children and adolescents under the age of 18. This differs from Europe, where Meta will not meddle with data of minors under legal age. However, Meta faces similar challenges in the United Kingdom and the European Union, where data protection agencies have ordered a halt to using customer data for AI training.
Meta has expressed disappointment, calling it a “regression in innovation” that will further delay Brazilians’ benefit from AI. Brazil is one of Meta’s largest markets, with approximately 102 million Facebook users and another 113 million on Instagram.
