Google is transitioning to a new search results page format that does not include the endless scroll feature, starting in 2021 for mobile searches and expanding to desktop in 2022. This means that this display format has only been in use for approximately 2-3 years.
Google states that this change is aimed at making search results load much faster, as previously users had to wait for the bottom search results to load, and many times users did not scroll down to see them. Testing also revealed that users were slightly less satisfied if they had to click the Next button or More results button.
