Cease of Microsfot’s backing for the Remote Desktop app on Windows prompts transition to a fresh Windows App alternative.

On May 27, 2025, Microsoft announced the discontinuation of support for the old Remote Desktop app for Windows, which was available on the Microsoft Store. Instead, users are encouraged to switch to the new Windows App designed for desktops running on the cloud.

Previously, Microsoft caused confusion by renaming the Remote Desktop app for iOS/macOS to Windows App. However, the platforms for Windows are distinct, with the new app replacing the old one. After May 27, Microsoft will remove the old Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store and block connections to cloud-based desktops. Users utilizing Remote Desktop for remote PC access are advised to transition to the Remote Desktop Connection feature of Windows instead.

TLDR: Microsoft is discontinuing support for the old Remote Desktop app for Windows and encouraging users to switch to the new Windows App designed for cloud-based desktops.
