Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, recently appeared on the In Good Company podcast by orges Bank Investment Management to discuss the current state of AI. He shared estimated figures suggesting that the current model training costs are around $100 million, with the next generation models that many companies are currently training expected to cost $1 billion. If the industry continues in this direction, he anticipates that model training costs could skyrocket to $10 billion or even $100 billion within the next 3 years.
Amodei predicts that the AI industry will advance in both algorithms and processing chip capabilities, leading to models that outperform humans in almost every field. However, he believes that the journey towards artificial general intelligence (AGI) will be gradual, rather than a sudden emergence of a single model achieving AGI.
Having previously worked at Baidu and Google, as well as spending nearly 5 years at OpenAI from 2016 to 2021, Amodei played a pivotal role in creating GPT2-3 as the head of research before eventually leaving to launch Anthropic in 2021.
