CEO of Instagram advises against excessive promotion of long videos to prevent devaluation of the platform.

Adam Mosseri, the CEO of Instagram, recently posted a clip where he mentioned that it’s a topic open to various opinions about whether Instagram will promote longform videos or not. The answer to the question is “no”.

Although Instagram users may not think about watching longform videos while using the platform, Instagram actually supports the posting of videos up to 1 hour in length, a feature that emerged from the now-defunct IGTV.

Mosseri explained that Instagram prioritizes two key platform values, connecting users with friends and helping users discover interesting content, which currently tends to be shortform videos. These two elements complement each other, such as when we come across a funny or intriguing video and share it with friends who might also enjoy it.

He believes that this value would diminish if Instagram heavily pushed longform videos because they require more time to watch, potentially detracting from viewing other content from friends and reducing sharing. This would result in less user engagement and connections. While shortform videos may not be able to do everything, he chooses to prioritize this aspect.

TLDR: Adam Mosseri confirmed that Instagram will not focus on promoting longform videos as it may detract from user engagement and connections compared to shortform videos.
