Challenging Accessibility: More than Half of Creators Struggle to Reach Audience Due to Platform Emphasis on Short Clips, Despite Preference for Longer Videos

The State of Create report from Patreon reveals that creators are struggling to reach their followers, with 53% admitting it is more challenging than five years ago. This is due to various platforms emphasizing algorithm-driven content and an increase in video content.

Particularly since TikTok gained popularity, other platforms have shifted focus to short videos, introducing features like Instagram’s Reels and YouTube’s Shorts. Despite short videos dominating feeds, 52% of users prefer longer videos for their entertainment value and engagement. Importantly, users are increasingly willing to pay to support creators.

Changes in platform algorithmic feeds make it difficult for creators to maintain meaningful engagement with fans. Even if followers are present, there’s no guarantee they will see the creator’s posts amidst algorithm-driven content. This shift encourages creators to prioritize deep engagement over likes, views, and follower count.

Patreon points out that creators feel restricted, as platforms like Instagram control visibility, with 78% believing algorithms influence their content and 56% feeling creatively stifled. Moreover, legal and policy changes within platforms like TikTok’s uncertain future, Meta’s content control policies, and the rise of violent content in platform X undermine creator trust.

While direct-to-consumer platforms like Patreon, Substack, and OnlyFans offer creators more content control, finding and connecting with willing paying fans remains a challenge.
