ChatGPT Temporarily Disables ‘Sky’ Voice Option Following Observation of Scarlett Johansson Resemblance

OpenAI introduced Voice Mode in ChatGPT back in September last year. ChatGPT is capable of responding in speech, with the voices being attributed to professional voice actors. However, the selection of 5 available voices – Breeze, Cove, Ember, Juniper, and Sky – sparked controversy when some noted similarities between Sky’s voice and that of actress Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff in Black Widow).

OpenAI confirmed that Sky’s voice belongs to a female professional voice actor, speaking naturally and not Scarlett Johansson. They have temporarily disabled the use of Sky’s voice to conduct further investigations. Additionally, OpenAI explained the rigorous process of selecting voices for ChatGPT, which involved over 400 applications from professional voice actors. The criteria for selection included ease of listening, naturalness, multilingual capability, and trustworthiness, resulting in the current availability of 5 voices.

TLDR: OpenAI has temporarily paused the use of Sky’s voice in ChatGPT to address concerns about voice selection, which involved a stringent process and attracted over 400 applications from professional voice actors.
