Market research company Appfigures has reported data on smartphone app downloads for the month of March 2025. The overview shows a significant shift as ChatGPT has emerged as the number 1 app globally (across iOS and Android), overtaking Instagram and TikTok.
The download numbers for all three apps are closely matched, with ChatGPT at 46 million, Instagram at 46 million, and TikTok at 45 million downloads. These figures vary when broken down by iOS App Store and Android Google Play. Facebook and WhatsApp rank 4th and 5th, respectively.
Appfigures notes that the download numbers for ChatGPT indicate a clear upward trend, rather than a temporary surge. This trend has been observed since February (and a new image editing tool was just released at the end of March).
