The National Information Center of China (CNNIC) recently released a report on the use of Generative AI in China, with a user base reaching 230 million people in June 2024, accounting for 1 in 6 of the country’s population.
The most popular service is Baidu’s Ernie Bot, capturing an 11.5% market share, followed by ChatGPT and Gemini at 7% and 3.8% respectively. Interestingly, CNNIC reported that neither of these chatbot services can be officially used.
Two out of three users in China stated that their main purpose for using GenAI is for Q&A systems on various topics of interest, while the remaining third use GenAI as an assistant for tasks like meeting notes and document summaries.
