California has enacted law AB-1831 to expand the scope of child sex abuse material (CSAM) to include images created from artificial intelligence, even if a direct victim cannot be identified. With the law now in effect, law enforcement agencies have begun to prosecute individuals involved in such activities.
The legislation stipulates that even though the images may not depict real children, AI models are ultimately generated from images of real individuals. These models have become instruments of harm to victims. Furthermore, the federal law in the United States prohibits the dissemination of child pornography without requiring a direct connection to real individuals.
One individual under suspicion is Darrin Bell, a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, after police investigated an account sharing 18 child pornography images and another 134 videos. The address linked to Bell is currently under investigation, and he has posted bail with a US $1 million bond.
