Xiaomi has announced its willingness to collaborate with law enforcement in investigating the accident in Anhui province, where an electric sports car SU7 was involved in a crash on March 29.
Prior to the incident, at around 10:27 pm, the vehicle was traveling on the Dezhou-Shangrao highway at a speed of 116 kilometers per hour with the Navigate on Autopilot feature engaged. Upon approaching a construction zone at approximately 10:44 pm, the lane was closed with a diversion. The driver attempted to slow down and steer but collided with a concrete barrier at a speed of 97 kilometers per hour, resulting in a fire that damaged the entire vehicle, claiming the lives of three occupants.
Some reports suggested that the car doors could not be opened, but Xiaomi clarified that the doors can be manually opened in case of emergency, even if the electrical system malfunctions.
Furthermore, the emergency communication system worked post-accident, contacting the police and ambulance services, who arrived at the scene around 11:00 pm.
The Xiaomi SU7’s autonomous driving system comes in two variants: using only cameras or incorporating LiDAR technology. The vehicle involved in the incident was equipped with the camera-only system.
