Durk Kingma, one of the co-founders of OpenAI (not as well-known), has announced that he is joining forces with the rival company Anthropic. Kingma, a prominent AI researcher who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, remained with the company until 2018 before transitioning to Google Brain/DeepMind until 2024, and most recently moved to Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI employees with differing perspectives.
Kingma stated that Anthropic’s AI development approach aligns with his beliefs, and many former colleagues from OpenAI and Google have also joined the team here. Anthropic recently welcomed another co-founder of OpenAI, John Schulman, who joined in August, following Jan Leike, the head of the Superalignment team overseeing AI safety, in directly transferring from OpenAI to Anthropic.
